Jurgen Klopp has rejected an approach from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) to become the next head coach of the men’s national team. Klopp, who left Liverpool at the end of last season, has informed US Soccer that he wishes to continue his break from the sport.
The USSF had identified Klopp as a top target to replace Gregg Berhalter, who was fired in July following the team’s disappointing performance at the World Cup. Klopp’s impressive track record with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool made him an attractive option, but the German manager ultimately decided to turn down the offer.
Klopp’s decision is a blow to US Soccer, which is eager to find a high-profile manager to lead the team into the next World Cup cycle. The USSF is now expected to turn its attention to other candidates, with former Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick and current Chelsea manager Graham Potter among the potential frontrunners.
