New Study Shows Exercise Can Lower AFib Risk

Study Highlights Importance of Exercise for Heart Health

According to a new study published in the European Heart Journal, a person's fitness levels could provide greater insight into their risk of developing atrial fibrillation (AFib), a common heart rhythm disorder that can increase the risk of stroke and heart failure.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Adelaide, found that participants who were able to exercise at the highest intensity and achieved the highest MET (metabolic equivalent task) measures were less likely to develop AFib. Specifically, those who met the recommended physical activity level of 500-1000 METs per week had a 25% lower risk of developing AFib compared to those who were less active.

The study also found that moderate-intensity exercise, such as brisk walking, can also improve cardiovascular outcomes, including a reduced risk of AFib. Researchers emphasized the importance of regular exercise for heart health, noting that simple activities like a daily walk can lower the risk of AFib and stroke.

The study's findings provide strong evidence that exercise can play a significant role in reducing the risk of AFib and maintaining heart health. By incorporating regular physical activity into their daily routines, individuals can take an active step towards protecting their hearts and reducing their risk of cardiovascular events.
